NEWS: **MEET THE DJS** Music n Chill

With an eclectic mix ranging from R&B to Latin Indie, Alyson Richardson brings us Music n Chill. A Pre-Med intending to major in Behavioral Biology, she says she’s “a fish following the Hopkins current,” though her music taste isn’t always mainstream. Tune into her show Fridays at 8pm, since, as she says, “Music n Chill is free, netflix cost $8.99+ a month, my dudes. You’re welcome.” Learn more about Alyson and her show below:

How do you go about putting together your show?

I just throw some playlist together of new releases and throwbacks that flow together. Sometimes I’ll take the whole to show to play an album through and talk about the background, samples, inspirations, and meanings I got from it. Sometimes I’ll have a song theme (e.g Drugs) or artist theme (e.g Chicago Artists).

What music do you typically play on your show?

I play a range of throwbacks, r&b, rock, pop, reggae, reggaeton, hip-hop, rap, Latin indie, jazz, dance, electronic, soul music, etc. I have an eclectic taste in music I try to incorporate into my show. I talk about the music (song, album, past work) and the artist, my thoughts of both and I introduce the songs and artist especially if it was a request from someone.

What radio stations do you listen to in Baltimore or at home?

I listen mainly to my playlists (narcissistic, I know right?), just shuffle soundcloud stream, play spotify discover, and go through apple music suggestions rather than the radio that rotates the same 5 songs for the whole day.

What’s your favorite new release?

A lot of good music has come out 2016 and 2017 but recently my favorite releases are: Big sean’s album “I decided.” Sampha’s new album “Process” and Herrick and Hooley’s single “ Make it Happen”

Favorite albums or artists? Tell us about your music taste.

This question is always a difficult one. It’s hard to choose favorites. I’d say some artists that are definitely up there are: J Cole, Aaliyah, Anderson Paak, Chance the Rapper, Sango, Xavier Omar, Amy Winehouse, Childish Gambino, Herrick and Hooley, Bob Marley, Alicia Keys, and the Beatles.

Have you ever DJed for real?

I DJ parties from time to time. Hml

Defend your favorite guilty pleasure music.

I enjoy some music people think is weird for my “usual taste of rap.” I love show and opera music from Wicked and the Phantom of the Opera. Sometimes when I shuffle it can go from Kendrick to “All I Ask” (Opera) and my friends still give me a double take. And who can forgot those emotional teenage angst songs about love and rebellion like from the Plain White T’s, Green Day, All American Rejects, and My Chemical Romance. Don’t even get me started on Disney music. No one can deny when “Part of your world" comes on we all become Ariel and belt the little mermaid for a few minutes.

What’s your usual excuse for skipping your radio show?

If I’m not at my show it’s because I’m taking my smart ass back to sunny south florida and getting tf outta this cold.
